My paintings are layers of translucent substrates, colors, and shapes that create a wavering effect to slow observation. I am often moved by the ephemerality of nature. When I see sunlight filtering through the trees or reflecting on the surface of the water, it resonates with my inner self. It is feeling like there is no sense of time and space but at the same time, I am observing the transient elements.  My work expresses the ambiguous "space/interval" where the ephemeral and the eternal come and go.

These paintings are called “Islands.”

Atsumi Okano was born in one of the southern islands in Japan and moved to different places.

Her memories are tied to each land.

She made these hexagonal columns and painted all the surfaces because if she brought the hexagonal shapes together, they could fill the space without gaps.

For this installation, viewers are invited to the space to move these paintings as they want.

There is no upside or downside and it is stackable.

These two images are the same artwork but are shown in different spaces.

The left image is six pieces stacked as one painting. Even though these are the same piece, their form keeps changing according to the spaces.
